Sentinel is a town in southwestern Washita County, Oklahoma, at the intersection of State Highways 44 and 55. Its roots are in farming and ranching country. A general store and post office opened nearby in 1898, and the railroad platted the present townsite in 1901 under the name Barton. The town took the name Sentinel in 1907, after a newspaper in nearby Cloud Chief. Cordell and Burns Flat are the closest neighboring towns.
